HE  IS  ABLE

“And when Jesus departed thence, two blind men followed Him, crying, and saying, ‘Thou son of David, have mercy on us.’  And when He was come into the house, the blind men came to Him:  and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this?’  They said unto Him, ‘Yea, Lord.’  Then touched He their eyes, saying ‘According to your faith be it unto you.’  And their eyes were opened”

(Matthew 9:27-29).

1.       He is able to SAVE

“But this man, because He continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.  Wherefore He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them”  (Hebrews 7:24-25).

And that’s why He came … to seek and to save!

His ability to do so is not altered by the passing years (v. 24) (as my ability to do things is!)  He is the same yesterday, today and forever!

But His ability to save may be counteracted by the unwillingness of the sinner to accept Him as Lord and Saviour …

2.       He is able to SECURE

“I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day” (II Timothy 1:12).

Some Christians believe He will keep the believer secure whatever betide.  Once saved, they say, always saved!!

But others see the necessity of “continuing in the faith” (Colossians 1:22-23), if we are to enter the Gloryland on “that Day.”   Mmmmm?

3.       He is able to SURPASS

“Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end.  Amen”  (Ephesians 3:20).

Notice how Paul builds up and up what the Lord Jesus is able to do… “exceedingly abundantly … above …all that we ask … or think”!!!  Wow!!

Thou are coming to a King,

Large petitions with thee bring;

For His grace and power are such –

None can ever ask too much!

                                                                   - John Newton

4.       He is able to SUCCOR

“Wherefore in all things it behoved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people.  For in that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succor them that are tempted” (Hebrews 2:17-18).

Because He knew temptation and suffering and misunderstanding and desertion by friends and bereavement and you-name-it … He knows what we go through during our earthly pilgrimage.  And He cares.  And He is able to comfort.

He’s the One who is able to “give songs in the night!” (Job 35:10) … if we cast our cares upon Him!!

CONCLUSION

“We look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:  Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto His glorious body, according to the working whereby He is able to subdue all things unto Himself” (Philippians 3:20-21).

On that Day when we rise to meet Him … there will be no more pain or tears or suffering … the thorns shall give way to a fir tree (Isaiah 55:13), and “the wolf and the lamb shall feed together” (Isaiah 65:25).

Every rebel of His Kingdom shall be put down … every blasphemous tongue silenced … everything that offendeth be cast out … death itself shall be destroyed.  Satan and those who chose to follow him will be cast into Hell.  And Paradise will be restored (Isaiah 35:4-10).

It is the promised salvation for those who respond as did those two blind men at Capernaum so long ago, “Yes, Lord, I believe!”
